Celebrate Juneteenth with Us!

Juneteenth serves as a national holiday commemorating the moment when enslaved individuals in Galveston,Texas, were finally informed of their freedom by Union troops in 1865. This order was brought forth by President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, signed two and a half years earlier. However, African Americans had been seeking freedom through a multitude of methods of resistance long before this proclamation. Although the 13th Amendment of 1865 officially abolished the institution of enslavement, many African Americans still faced an uphill battle for respect and equal treatment in society.

Despite enduring persistent challenges and barriers, African Americans have continued to advance and make invaluable contributions to society through their unwavering determination. Maryland has its own unique story of emancipation, with 1864 being the year the state officially abolished enslavement.
