Each month HCLS co-hosts an online roundtable focusing on a local business owned by a Person of Color in Howard County.  The owner shares the experiences and challenges they face as a local business owner. The discussion is moderated by Nat Alston, Chair and Founder of the Ujamma Business Roundtable. Includes time for Q&A. The business roundtable normally meets on the 4th Tuesday of the month.

The featured guest of the January Business Roundtable is Marcia Thibodo, Owner of Oh, What A Cake!

Marcia Thibodo is an “Army brat” who has lived all over the US and Europe. Her family settled in Columbia, Maryland where she graduated from Wilde Lake High School in 1983. After graduating from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County in 1987 with a dual major in Computer Science and Information Systems Management, she began an 18+ year career at Verizon as a computer programmer. During this time she also received a Master of Science degree in Computer Science Management from the University of Maryland, University College.

Throughout her 18 years at Verizon, Ms. Thibodo baked for family and friends while taking pastry courses. In December, 2006, she took a corporate buyout from Verizon to finish her culinary studies at Anne Arundel Community College. The next step on her journey towards entrepreneurship was a 12-week “business bootcamp” at the Women Entrepreneurs of Baltimore.

On Saturday, December 6, 2008, a ribbon-cutting Grand Opening Celebration began the next chapter of her life. Oh, What A Cake! has been very well received. Customers are stopping by and spreading the word about the great products and superb service. Specializing in decorated wedding and special occasion cakes, Oh, What A Cake! has been a top choice for cakes and desserts in Columbia for 13 years.
