Program Description

Event Details

Symbols are a form of communication that we encounter in our lives each day. Tour participants will explore how European artists in the Renaissance and Baroque periods used religious, allegorical, moral, and mythical symbols. Consider the symbolism in paintings, sculptures, and other art objects to understand and interpret deeper meaning.

The docents presenting this class are Leslie Bethell and Judy Weitzman.

Leslie Bethell has an AB from Mount Holyoke College in French Literature and Medieval Studies (1991) and an MA from St. John’s College in Annapolis (1997). She is a RPCV (Mongolia 2003-2005), She has worked on health projects in Sierra Leone (2005), and in Malawi as the Education Coordinator in a refugee camp (2006-2008). Stateside, She has taught middle and high school French and Social Studies at Loyola Blakefield (1997-2001), managed programs at the Baltimore Council on Foreign Affairs (2009-2012), and managed the after school education program at the Village Learning Place (2012-2013). She is married and has two step-children, 21 and 17.

Judy Weitzman has been a Walters Art Museum Docent for the past six years.  She enjoys touring with school children as well as adults and has been actively creating and presenting virtual tours this past year.  Although her background was in pharmacy, Judy's love of art, art history and lifelong learning is invigorating her retirement.  Judy also takes a variety of classes at the Renaissance Institute at Notre Dame.
