Dr. Patrick Chung, Assistant Professor of History at the University of Maryland, explores the historical places and events that serve as the backdrop of Lisa See’s The Island of Sea Women. The title is the 2020 One Maryland One Book selection.

This presentation provides a brief overview of 20th-century Korean history, with particular focus on the Japanese colonization of Korea (1910-1945), the Jeju Uprising (1948-1949), and the Korean War (1950-1953). In doing so, it will highlight the centrality of war and memory in See’s work and, more broadly, modern Korean society.
