Unsung Architects of Freedom: Smallwood & Torrey’s Bold Crusade

The formerly enslaved Smallwood and the Yale-educated Torrey did not have much in common but formed a powerful, interracial alliance that defied the norms of their time. Smallwood coined the term “Underground Railroad”, and worked closely with Torrey from 1842 to 1844, helping hundreds of slaves escape north to freedom.
