Workshop #1 (July 21) THEME: Tearing / Deconstructing

Question: How Do Words Tear?

Directive: Bravely choose papers or fabric and begin to tear…just engage in the action of tearing… no forms or images are necessary… join your community participants in exploring what tears them apart…

Materials: Paper, newspaper, printed patterned paper, from lightweight to heavy. Fabric for tearing- colored tissue paper, etc.

Outcome of the Workshop: a table with torn papers, fabric and collage strips to represent how words tear communities and people apart.

Explore the things that tear us apart…

Build a pile of chaos: things are damaged- acknowledge the damage- tear at our community- when we notice these things, it is a powerful way to move through the disruption- let’s move with the damage- once we are faced with it- witness it- observe it- we can BE With it- All feelings are welcome

Bravely choose lightweight or heavy weighted paper and tear strips to explore energy and resistance felt in these words…

Bravely choose patterned fabric and create torn edges to explore the messiness that comes with exploring words…

Closure: Pull a strip of paper or fabric from the pile and bravely write a word that expresses the theme of tearing. Share your word in a closing circle.
