How do aerospace engineers develop applications to study the universe?

Steven Tremor Cale, Aerospace Engineer at Goddard Space Flight Center, discusses the design process learned while working on NASA Goddard projects such as Robotic Refueling Mission 3 (RRM3), X-ray Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission (XRISM), CADMES Europa Lander project, and Dragonfly. The stages of an XRISM project design problem will be examined from beginning to end.

Building technology for aerospace applications pushes the limits of current capability. Extensive testing is required to eliminate failures and achieve last-minute adjustments prior to a successful launch. Review of the design, build, test, and flight support process will be discussed, with examples from the field as well as an examination of mindsets and skills required to deal with challenges late in the design process.
