What are torchbearers? A Torchbearer is defined as, “a person who leads or inspires others in working toward a valued goal.” For more than four decades, Columbia’s Torchbearers have led and inspired activism fueled by personal mission and a passion toward service. Lela J. Sewell-Williams, manager of the Columbia Archives, conducts a dialogue between regional Torchbearers, Dr. Ruteena Blake (Little Theater Movement, Young Travels Club), Liz Bobo (former Howard County Executive, former MD House of Delegates), Judy Vogel Glaser (Women's Center) and Pearl Atkinson-Stewart (C.U.B.E.). The conversation focuses on how personal mission aligned with community activism has paved the way toward securing practices that have and will be beneficial. The Torchbearers have committed to the preservation of their legacies of activism in the Columbia Archives.
