Program Description

Event Details

What can gardeners do in the cold of winter when the ground is frozen? Dig into sustainable gardening and help stock our community Seed Library!

Learn, share, and take part in free demonstrations and workshops. Activities include:

  • Backyard Composting demonstration

  • Winter Seed Sowing demonstration

  • Ask-a-Master Gardener

  • Bay-Wise sustainable gardening information

  • Tool Swap

  • Workshops (see below!)

What is the Seed Library? It is a great opportunity to acquire new varieties, save money, and reduce seed waste while connecting with fellow gardeners. You can take part in the Seed Library by visiting Miller Branch on select dates. While the Seed Library won’t be open on January 24th, you are welcome to visit it on one of the other open dates.

You do not have to bring any seeds to participate in the Seed Drive. Both seeds harvested from your garden and seed packets are welcome. New to seed harvesting? Find advice at https://www.hclibrary.org/things/seeds/.

All ages and experience levels welcome, from those who have never gardened but would like to, to those who have been growing flowers and veggies for years.  Families welcome (children must be accompanied).

Workshops:

1-2:30pm: Seed Collection, Processing and Germination for Native Plants

An introduction by the Howard County Master Gardeners on how to harvest your own seeds and legally and responsibly collect seeds in the wild, along with storage and seed starting.

2:30-4pm: Scrappy Cooking- Grow Your Own Kitchen

Ever thought your kitchen scraps could make a comeback? Learn from the Community Ecology Institute how to grow fresh ingredients from odds and ends, save a little cash, and give your leftovers a second life instead of sending them to the landfill!

Registration is not required! We recommend filling out the registration below only to indicate your interest in attending.
