Marcus Nicks will cover various women who have served as trailblazers and inspirational figures, contributing not only to African American history but to society at large. The talk will take an in-depth look at Black women primarily throughout the state of Maryland, ranging from the 1800s to contemporary times. It will discuss the impactful roles of Black women as community organizers, civic activists, educational leaders, freedom fighters, religious leaders, and much more. Despite barriers of racism, sexism, and numerous other injustices, Black women have continued to triumph and overcome obstacles thrust in their way.

About the Presenter: Historian and Educator Marcus "Sankofa" Nicks

Marcus Sankofa Nicks is a historian, educational leader and healer-activist. He is the founder of History Heals Consulting L.L.C., a business devoted to using African American history as a vehicle to aid schools, institutions and businesses in fostering a healthy and inclusive environment holistically. He holds a Master of Arts degree in African American Studies from Morgan State University, and his research primarily focuses on the history of African Americans of Howard County, the state of Maryland, and throughout the United States. He is a former educator in Maryland’s Howard County Public School System, with over 12 years of experience, and  currently serves as a museum consultant. His mission is to uplift, inspire, and empower his community through the historic lens of African American History.
