Background Information:
The Maryland General Assembly consists of the House of Delegates and the Maryland Senate. The Legislature is responsible for passing the state budget. While the Governor can propose programs, taxes, and other initiatives, the Legislature must approve those expenditures and identify revenue sources.
In addition, the Legislature is responsible for passing bills that regulate public services (such as public schools), private enterprises (including utilities, hospitals, insurance, tenant rights), environmental and land use issues, election processes, certain privileges (such as firearms, and health care access), and criminal justice (including juvenile justice). They write the laws that govern daily life in Maryland.

Legislative Calendar:
The 448th session of the Legislature convenes on January 14, 2026, and adjourns on April 13, 2026.
Currently, legislators are preparing for the upcoming session, with bills being drafted and submitted for review prior to introduction.
