The League of Women Voters of Howard County is proud to co-sponsor this year's Legislative Breakfast with the Howard County Library System as part of our joint civic education partnership. 

At this event, we will serve light refreshments and hear from the Howard County Delegation to the Maryland General Assembly.  

This free event will take place on Saturday, January 4, 2025, at 10:30 AM in the Belmont/Hockley Rooms of the HCLS Elkridge Branch Library, 6540 Washington Blvd, Elkridge, MD 21075.

Doors open at 10:15 AM. Grab a coffee and snack, and meet your fellow attendees.

Background Information: 

The Maryland General Assembly consists of the House of Delegates and the Maryland Senate. The Legislature is responsible for passing the state budget. While the Governor can propose programs, taxes, and other initiatives, the Legislature must approve those expenditures and find the revenue to pay for them. 

In addition, the Legislature is responsible for passing bills that regulate public services (such as public schools), private enterprises (including utility regulation, pollution controls, and fracking), certain privileges (like firearms, driver's licenses, and abortion access), and criminal activity (including juvenile justice and cannabis reform). They write the laws that govern daily life in Maryland.

Legislative Calendar:

  • The 447th session of the Legislature convenes on January 8, 2025, and will end on April 7, 2025.
  • Currently, the Legislature is busy preparing for the upcoming session with bills being drafted and submitted for review prior to introduction.

  • District 9, which includes part of Montgomery County, is represented by Senator Katie Fry Hester and Delegates Courtney Watson, Chao Wu and Natalie Ziegler.
  • District 12, which includes part of Anne Arundel County, is represented by Senator Clarence Lam and Delegates Jessica Feldmark and Terri Hill. (The third delegate serves in a subdistrict that is entirely in Anne Arundel County.)
