Martin Luther King Jr., a clergyman and civil rights leader, was fatally shot at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee, on April 4, 1968.  The Civil Rights Act of 1968 was signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson one week later, during the Holy Week Uprising, a wave of civil unrest and protests that swept across the country in the days after Dr. King’s assassination.
