Event Details

On January 17 1944, the battle known as the Battle of Rome started.  It was comprised of four assaults.  Starting around the Abbey at Monte Cassino and the Gustav Line to the end in May 1944, when they smashed the Senger line and open the way to Rome.  With great loss of life, it was described as a Pyrrhic victory.  During the battle one of the iconic film clips of the war was created: the bombing of the Abbey. This prompted the creation of the Monument Men, a group of the American Army soldiers who were sent to rescue and recover art and artifacts from the battlefield and the enemy. Come join an informal discussion of the battle and the aftermath of the war.
