THE TOUR
On this tour conversational and interactive tour of the Harvard Art Museums, Sachi Laumas will explore the sometimes hidden work of art conservation and its implications for how we experience art. She will also discuss the Harvard Art Museums’ Straus Center for Conservation and Technical Studies, the first scientifically based conservation and research department in any U.S. museum. The Straus remains a world leader in conservation practice and training to this day. Stops on the tour are the marble Nydia, the Blind Flower Girl of Pompeii (1859), made in Rome by American sculptor Randolph Rogers; a Persian sweetmeat dish from c. 1200 (Seljuk-Atabeg period); and Piet Mondrian’s Composition with Blue, Black, Yellow, and Red (1922), an abstract painting still in its original artist-made frame.
THE GUIDE
Sachi Laumas is a Harvard College student from Connecticut studying neuroscience and the history of art and architecture. She is especially interested in the intersections of art and scientific thinking. Outside of class, she enjoys reading fiction, taking photos for the student newspaper, doing yoga, and trying to find the best matcha in Cambridge.
THE PROGRAM
The Ho Family Student Guide Program prepares undergraduate students to create and lead original, research-based tours of the Harvard Art Museums for the public and other audiences by request. Student Guides teach in the museums' free, art-based U.S. citizenship course and also develop interpretive materials for social media (Instagram: @harvardarthappens; YouTube: @harvartmuseums). Through their training, student guides gain knowledge of the collections and develop skills in critical thinking, visual analysis, public speaking and leadership.
This program is supported by the Ho Family Student Guide Fund.
