Frederick County Public Libraries (FCPL) is pleased to announce that the highly acclaimed, bestselling author, Wes Moore will participate in a virtual program for their annual Frederick Reads event. This program is a collaborative effort between FCPL, Frederick Community College, and the Weinberg Center for the Arts. Presented with support from Howard County Library System.

Moore's latest work, Five Days: The Fiery Reckoning of an American City, a kaleidoscopic account of five days in the life of a city on the edge, told through eight characters on the frontlines of the protests that overtook Baltimore after the death of Freddie Gray.

Moore’s talk will also highlight his earlier New York Times Bestseller, The Other Wes Moore as well as its young adult version Discovering Wes MooreThese titles chronicle the lives of two kids named Wes Moore who both grew up fatherless in similar Baltimore neighborhoods. The author’s journey took him from wayward inner city youth to decorated combat veteran, Rhodes Scholar, White House fellow, social entrepreneur, and business leader while the other Wes Moore ended up convicted of murder and serving a life sentence.

Wes Moore will present a brief lecture, followed by an interview with Frederick Community College Professor Shemica Sheppard and an audience Q&A.

Shemica Sheppard is an Associate Professor at Frederick Community College. She teaches in two departments, English and Communication, and her specialty is developmental reading, having spent seven years as a reading specialist in an inner-city school district just outside of Philadelphia, Pa. Shemica is especially interested inequity in the educational system for both students with special needs and students of color. She is dedicated to social justice and her teaching and personal interests reflect just that. She has recently been awarded a position on the Board of Trustees for the Frederick Public Library.

This program is also supported by The C. Burr Artz Trust, The Ausherman Family Foundation, Frederick Arts Council, The Delaplaine Foundation, Curious Iguana, and Plamondon Hospitality.
