VOICES OF TODAY: Listening to Contemporary Music
Part I: Tuesday, February 9 | 7:00 pm
Dr. Richard Giarusso, will introduce listeners to a wide range of music written by some of today’s most dynamic and exciting composers. We will discuss constructive strategies for engaging with music that is new to us, and perhaps written in a style that strikes our ears as being in some way “unusual.” You may come away with a newfound admiration for the music of certain composers, or a more informed sense of why certain music does not appeal to you. The overall objective is to think constructively about our habits of listening, and how we can begin to make some sense of the rich musical landscape of the 21st century.
Richard Giarusso is Chair of the Musicology Department at The Peabody Conservatory, where he teaches classes in 19th- and 20th-century music. He holds a Ph.D. in Historical Musicology from Harvard University and a BA in Music and English from Williams College. A skilled and dynamic lecturer, he has presented talks for the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Johns Hopkins Alumni Association, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, the Washington Bach Consort, the Shriver Hall Concert Series, and The Baltimore Museum of Art. In addition to his academic work, Richard maintains an active career as a singer and conductor throughout the Northeast. He currently serves as music director of the Georgetown Chorale in Washington, D.C., and as artistic director of the Voce Chamber Singers in northern Virginia. Learn more at www.richardgiarusso.com.
