Approaching Late Beethoven
In the last ten years of Beethoven’s life, he embarked upon an extraordinary creative journey that pushed his groundbreaking style in startling new directions. Such monumental projects as the Missa Solemnis, the Ninth Symphony, and the Diabelli Variations were products of this “late” period in Beethoven’s life, but, above all, the decade was dominated by an intense focus on the string quartet. In this presentation, we will consider some of the factors that define Beethoven’s “late” style—features that marked new directions in Beethoven’s compositional thought, that mystified Beethoven’s contemporaries, and that still have the power to astonish audiences today.
