Event Details

Howard County Bee City presents a talk by Kevin Heffernan who will go over the status of butterflies in the county based on the results of the ten year survey and the pioneering work of Dick Smith.

You will learn about butterflies that are most commonly seen and which are rarely seen, when they are flying, how they overwinter, and more. He will talk about several tools that have been developed to help ID butterflies in the county and how someone can participate in the survey. Learn what you can do to help encourage butterflies to visit your yard.

Kevin has been a member of the Howard County Bird Club for >40 years. He is the past president, chaired the May Count for 15 years, and has led numerous bird walks. He is currently the co-chair of the butterfly survey which is currently in its 11th year. He is also on the Howard County Bee City committee which encourages people to plant native plant pollinator gardens. He has an extensive (300+ plant) native plant pollinator garden at his home in Ellicott City.
