In this special virtual conversation with T. Alan Hurwitz, author of Let’s Go In: My Journey to a University Presidency, Hurwitz shares the story of how he rose through the ranks of academia to become the president of not one, but two, universities—National Technical Institute for the Deaf at Rochester Institute of Technology and Gallaudet University, and discusses some of the experiences he encountered as a Deaf person, and the events, people, and experiences that shaped his personal and professional life. All registrants will be entered into a drawing to receive a free copy of Let's Go In! Ten winners will be randomly selected and notified after the event. Voice interpretation and CART provided. Presented as part of a partnership between Howard County Library System, Howard County Association of the Deaf, and Maryland Deaf and Digital Culture Library. T. Alan Hurwitz is President Emeritus of Gallaudet University, and President and Dean Emeritus of the National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID) at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). Hurwitz also served as Vice President and Dean of RIT. An electrical engineer by training, Hurwitz’s career at RIT/NTID began in 1970 when he was hired as an educational specialist in RIT’s College of Engineering. During the course of his career, he has served in leadership positions in a variety of professional and deaf advocacy organizations. Among the many awards he has received, he holds an honorary doctorate from California State University at Fresno and he was honored as the Council for Advancement and Support of Education’s CEO of the Year. He is the author of Let’s Go In: My Journey to a University Presidency (Gallaudet Press, 2020). Angela Officer, moderator, is currently the Senior Project Manager at T-Mobile Accessibility with thirty years of experiences working alongside the executive team of a Telecommunications company. She was promoted several times to her current position as Senior Project Manager for T-Mobile Accessibility (35 states plus Federal Relay Service). Aside from her demanding job, Angie is very active in the community and has a long list of awards – she received the Sprint Relay Program Management of the Year Award in 2011 and the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) Distinguished Alumni Award in 2000. She also received the National Business and Disability Council’s Silver Employee of the Year Award for exemplifying the council’s philosophy that qualified people with disabilities make significant contributions to their employers. Angie is a graduate of Rochester Institute of Technology where she met her husband David. Together, they have a beautiful daughter, Lexi. In her free time, Angie likes to travel, hike with David & their fun-loving dog Coco, and she treasures opportunities to share good food and conversation with friends and family. |
