General description:  Each presentation will concern a number of works of art  at the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore.   “Exploring” the museum via Zoom, we can examine, discuss, and compare paintings, sculpture and objects using different media.  We can also compare and contrast things that are not near each other in the museum, or not often on view.  Our goal will be to have some fun, hone observation skills, and gain a deeper appreciation  of art of different times, different cultures,  and different regions.

Docent Sheila Vidmar. Sheila has lived in the Baltimore area all her life.  She retired from a career as a litigation attorney and has been volunteering as a docent at the Walters since 2013.  Sheila enjoys giving tours of the collection in person and via Zoom.

September 20: Renaissance and Baroque Portraits (online) REGISTER

October 25: 19th Century Landscapes (online) Nineteenth century artists used landscape painting to both reflect and shape environmental understanding.   Landscape artists like Theodore Rousseau presented a vision of nature not controlled by man.  Others like Alfred Sisley foregrounded a lovely scene of pastoral perfection, while in the background recognized the industrialization that was overtaking the countryside.   This presentation will discuss how these artists conveyed images of nature, and what that revealed about their consciousness of environmental issues.
